Humble Brag: It’s Always Mother’s Day At My House

What sayings do your children have that are now part of the family’s vernacular? In my first newsletter here I shared the reason I named this substack TUESDAYS. My oldest daughter was learning the days of the week when she was also wearing underwear that said Sunday, Monday, Tuesday etc. — she confused things and clung to the idea that underwear were actually called Tuesdays.
My youngest who is 2 years old keeps saying “Happy Mother’s Day!” well over a month past Mother’s Day here in the USA. However, I’m in support of celebrating Mamas all year around and refuse to correct her on this, maybe we should all call our Moms and say “Happy Mother’s Day,” as often as possible.

Morning Scramble
The sheer number of activities which happen before 8:00AM in my house with a 5 year old and 2 year old is nothing short of astonishing.
Mornings used to be consistently miserable for me once I added child #2, but then I let go of all the things I used to do pre school drop off, (read: sleep, workout, stare into the abyss) and started to grasp sequence and timing as a mom. Now I have some semblance of sanity in the mornings and even cherish the chaotic moments.
I try and have 1 cup of coffee before the kids are awake. Then, while I’m cooking breakfast they do an easy activity that doesn’t have to be monitored: painting with water only, reusable sticker books, or magnetic dress up dolls to name a few (fyi great gifts for kids ages 2-5). And the nuclear option, which, tbh I press that button a lot, are cartoons!

Meanwhile I scramble some eggs, assemble some veggies and fruit with smoked salmon. While they eat I use my LED mask by Omnilux (yes it is expensive, yes it is effective, yes I swear by it). Especially, if you like me, can only get facials sporadically, I think this is the MVP for at-home beauty tools.

Mom Hack
Just like I learned to do things that suit my current life, I learned to buy and wear things that suit my current life — not my past life, or future life. I used to love tailored clothing, in fact, I still do, but guess what? Most of my time is now at home doing projects with the kids or at the playground surrounded by dirt, bubbles, and snacks; all of which stain clothing. So I’ve embraced my love of clothing — and the phase of life I’m in — by refocusing my purchases for this life phase.
Case in point, I upgraded my loungewear game after kid #2. I am a big believer in pajamas — ones which are indulgent, chic, and wear / wash well. I try to get one nice pair a year (usually when there is a seasonal sale). My favorites are Olivia von Halle and Petite Plume silk sets. Petite Plume makes adorable matching adult/children’s pjs — shout out to Petite Plume’s customer service as well (I had a lot of questions about sizing and exchanges/returns were super fluid). Really other e-commerce brands should take note.
Prior to children I wasn’t really a sweat pant person, but then I discovered the practicality of a matching loungewear set and leaned into the sporty vibe. Below the perfect example by my friend and fellow mama Marissa Webb. I don’t know what sort of voodoo she figured out, but these sweats do not bag out or lose their shape yet are 100% cotton.
