End of School

Cycles and timelines are such odd things. I feel like I blink, and suddenly I’m shocked that my children are no longer newborns. They’re wrapping up another school year (the first for my youngest) and heading into second grade and Pre-K 2.

Even though I’m not a student in any traditional sense, I still get the end-of-school-year jitters. I find myself impatient for summer to arrive. I’m ready for long, meandering days by the sea, Aperol Spritz lunches, and living exclusively in cut-off shorts and caftans.

We’re spending a couple of weeks in Sag Harbor before kicking off July in Corsica. We traveled there two years ago and fell in love with a beautiful vineyard, Domaine Saparale, in Sartène, so we’ll revisit it after a two-day layover in Paris. Then we’ll head to another Corsican town we haven’t explored yet—this one a bit closer to the water.

The kids will have what I think of as a free-range childhood in Sag Harbor: lazy mornings, long hours outdoors, slightly chilly swims, and probably too much pie and ice cream. Then we’ll embark on our little Mediterranean jaunt where we do nothing but enjoy the sea, sun, and time together on repeat, before returning to Brooklyn and the peculiar world of city camp life—a rhythm I still find somewhat odd, but one that so many families rely on to balance work, structure, and summer fun.

Things I Didn’t Buy This Week

SOOOOoooooo many sales lately.

As usual, I do not need anything. I had a real come-to-Jesus moment about my actual daily life and why so many of the things I want are just going to sit in my closet because I have absolutely no purpose for them.

At this point, I’m really living in sentimental jewelry and washable clothes—usually some version of a jean or easy short (below, a favorite from Matteau), a vintage t-shirt, and a “fun” shoe. Most often that means a slip-on or flip-flop because I’m running out the door chasing one child or two.

Speaking of vintage t-shirts, I love the way Jennifer Alfano styles these souvenir-shop tees with her exquisite jewelry. Her pieces somehow feel modern and timeless at the same time—the kind of jewelry you'll wear forever. Definitely subscribe to her Substack; it's one of my favorites.

Things I Did Buy This Week

I love these very inexpensive H&M jelly flip-flops. Highly recommend for the pool or beach, but not for walking miles in. H&M also has some surprisingly cute one-piece swimsuits right now. I know—I was surprised too.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are some very expensive Eres swimsuits I’m really feeling. I bought the bikini and am happy to report that it stays put and, perhaps most importantly, covers my unmentionable tramp stamp. Sadly, you read that correctly. Insert crying-laughing emoji here. A relic of a former version of myself.
